My dad likes to fuss at me about the fact that I like to have a beer or glass of wine with friends. When I heard this story from my mother, I thought it was appropriate that my taste for alcohol could be traced back to my dad.
One day when I was just a baby, my mom left me alone with my dad while she went out to run errands. I was my dad's first child and I was teething, so before my mom left the house, he asked what should be done if I start to cry. My mom explained that if he rubbed a little whisky on my gums, it ought to numb them and stop my crying. When my mom returned home, she found me out cold in my bed and asked my dad how long I had been asleep. My dad reported that he had merely done as he was instructed and given me a cap full of whisky when I began to cry. I had been sleeping for quite a while because I was, ahem, drunk as a skunk. You've got to love irony. |
