There are many poignant stories about Grandma but this is more of an illustration...
Grandma has lied about her age for a long as I can remember. Any time I asked her age, she would become either coy or offended and simply state that she was "Fifty-plus," "Sixty-plus" and so on. The year that she turned eighty, she began dropping the truth about her age at any given opportunity, prefacing many anticdotes with "Well, now that I'm eighty..." Sadly, we never knew that Grandma was actually two years younger than what she (and we) originally believed. Bless her heart, she may not have fibbed if she knew the truth. I suppose she might sum up this story as she so often does these days, "So geht es, und niemand versheht es." So life goes and no one understands it. |
